Jojoba Oil: A Hard Working Seed That’s Gentle on Your Skin

Jojoba Branch with Flower and Nuts

Jojba oil is an extract of the seeds of the jojoba plant (Simmondsia chinensis) indigenous to southern U.S. and northern Mexico but also farmed in Israel and Argentina. In its pure version it has a bright golden color, although during processing it is transformed to clear and transparent. Because it doesn’t contain triglycerides it doesn’t oxidize easily and therefore has a long shelf life. Interestingly, jojoba oil is actually not oil but a mixture of long chain monounsaturated liquid wax esters and could be credited for saving the sperm whale since it took the place of the oil for which they were hunted.

  • High Vitamin E: promotes healthy & clear skin
  • Antioxidant: prevents damage from free radicals
  • High similarity to sebum (the substance made up of triglycerides, free fatty acids, wax esters, squalene, cholesterol esters, and cholesterol secreted by the sebaceous glands in our skin)
  • Antibacterial and antifungal: it is so effective that Staphylococcus aureus and Candida albicans cannot reproduce and die when they come into contact with jojoba oil. It can, in fact, be used to control mildew.
  • Noncomedogenic: won’t clog pores
